Visiting a finished oak-framed home is one of the most valuable steps a self-builder can take – and Carpenter Oak are offering a rare opportunity to do just that at our upcoming open house events.
When: Saturday 11th April 2026
Where: Oxfordshire
How to attend: Register your interest
Seeing a completed home in person allows visitors to experience what drawings and photographs simply can’t convey. From the moment you step inside, you can appreciate the scale of the spaces, the warmth of the exposed oak frame, and the way natural light moves through the house.
The event also offers valuable insight into how traditional oak framing works alongside modern building performance. Visitors can see first-hand how pegged mortice and tenon joints sit comfortably with large areas of glazing, high levels of insulation and contemporary finishes, showcasing how oak-framed homes can be both full of character and highly energy efficient.
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask informed questions about the design process, layout decisions, budgeting and construction, as well as how the home has been future-proofed for long-term living, and talk to the owners of this home to hear about their self-build experience. It’s also a chance to see the craftsmanship up close – from the structural oak frame to the finer details that complete the finished house.
The Properties
The first property is the Oak Framed H-Shaped House, a 3-bedroom home shortlisted for Best Oak Framed Home in the Build It Awards 2025. The distinctive H-shaped layout clearly demonstrates how oak framing can create generous, open living areas while maintaining privacy between living and sleeping wings – resulting in a home that feels calm, practical and thoughtfully planned. Find out more about this home.
The second property is Shepherds House, a large two-storey home, just 5 minutes drive from the first home, which was completed in 2019. This home has generous living areas on the ground floor, and three bedrooms on the first floor. It benefits from additionally considered design elements such as a double-height entranceway and an oak balcony extending from the first floor sitting room. Find out more about this home.
For anyone considering a new oak framed home or extension, visiting real, lived-in projects like these provide clarity, confidence and inspiration – helping you make informed decisions before embarking on your own self-build journey.
