Planning Permission
If you’re wondering about planning permission, this would depend on what you plan to use the boathouse for. If it does not include living accommodation it could be considered to be an outbuilding under permitted development, but there are other restrictions, for example if it’s within the grounds of a listed building. - On the tidal River Tay, our team installed an intricate structural frame inside an existing stone boathouse, carefully coordinating the installation around changing river levels. Using locally sourced Scottish Douglas fir and larch, the project demonstrates how structural timber can successfully combine sustainability, engineering precision and exceptional craftsmanship. - The Highland Estate Boathouse on the shores of Loch Ness occupies a remote and environmentally sensitive setting where every stage of construction required meticulous coordination. With no conventional site access, materials and equipment were transported across the loch by barge and landing craft. Specialist contractors constructed inner and outer cofferdams to create a temporary dry dock for the foundations before our installation team carefully erected the handcrafted green oak frame using a compact crawler crane. Larch is equally well suited to demanding external environments. Naturally weather resistant and highly durable without chemical treatment, it is an excellent choice for cladding, external detailing and, where appropriate, structural timber framing. Its distinctive grain and rich colour mature gracefully over time, complementing both traditional and contemporary designs.
