Set on the banks of the River Fowey in Cornwall, Oakenhurst Boathouse is a striking example of how a structural oak frame can transform a challenging site into a truly special waterside building. Designed by Roderick James Architects and built by Carpenter Oak in 2006, the boathouse sits atop an existing Victorian stone structure, blending historic fabric with contemporary craftsmanship.
Building where access is defined by the tides
Access to the site was one of the defining challenges of the project. With no road access and no possibility of using lorries, the installation required meticulous planning and teamwork. The Carpenter Oak team worked in harmony with the tides, transporting timbers by tractor and trailer as close as possible before using telehandlers during low spring tides to lift the oak frame components into position. This tidal choreography was critical to delivering the frame safely and accurately.
A carefully crafted oak frame for light, views and architectural detail
The structural oak frame is arranged over three bays. Two bays are fully open and vaulted, creating a dramatic sense of volume, while the third incorporates a mezzanine level that provides a bedroom area with ensuite, and cosy lounge room below. The craftsmanship of the frame is evident throughout, with features including curved queen posts, dragon tie hips, double purlins, curved tie beams and bespoke curved oak balustrading.
Internally, the oak structure is left exposed, celebrating the natural character and warmth of the timber. Large areas of direct glazing enhance the connection to the surrounding landscape, while the final bay is fully glazed on three sides, framing exceptional views across the River Fowey and flooding the space with natural light.
Externally, exposed sprocket rafters articulate the junction between roof and frame, creating a subtle kick that adds elegance to the roofline. The building is clad in timber, allowing it to sit comfortably within its riverside setting, while the tiled roof provides durability and a timeless finish.
A timeless example of bespoke oak framing
Oakenhurst Boathouse is a testament to the versatility of oak framing and Carpenter Oak’s ability to deliver complex projects in demanding locations, combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative problem-solving to create a building perfectly rooted in its place.
