Live Build Event Gives Self-Builders an Inside Look at an Oak Frame Extension in Somerset

On Saturday 19th July, Carpenter Oak's Dan Wilson and Sophie Taylor welcomed self-builders, architects and homeowners to a successful Live Build event at a stunning oak frame extension project in Somerset.

With glorious summer weather, visitors were able to tour the build and gain a unique insight into how a structural oak frame works alongside modern encapsulation systems and the wider building fabric to create a high-performance home.

A Rare Opportunity to See an Oak Frame Mid-Build

Led by Carpenter Oak's Design & Project Manager, Dan Wilson, the guided tours gave attendees the chance to see a structural timber frame at one of the most informative stages of construction.

Having worked in the self-build industry for many years, Dan shared his experience and answered questions on everything from structural design and engineering to planning a successful self-build project.

The event was carefully timed so visitors could see the oak frame after it had been expertly raised by Carpenter Oak's specialist team, and once the encapsulation system had been installed, but before internal finishes concealed the construction. Seeing the building at this stage made it much easier to understand how the oak frame, insulation, encapsulation and other building materials work together as one integrated building system.

Celebrating Traditional Craftsmanship

One of the highlights of every Live Build event is seeing the beauty of traditional oak framing up close.

Visitors were able to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into every Carpenter Oak frame, from the carefully selected green oak to the precision-cut mortice and tenon joints, all traditionally secured with solid oak pegs by our skilled carpenters. Whether at a Live Build or one of our Open House events, it's always rewarding to see people's reaction when they experience the scale, character and natural beauty of an oak frame in person.

Technical Advice for Self-Builders and Architects

The event also provided plenty of opportunities for attendees to discuss their own projects with Dan and ask technical questions about structural timber framing, design considerations and the practicalities of building with oak.

For architects, it was an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how traditional oak frames can be successfully integrated into contemporary building design, while self-builders left with greater confidence in the construction process and what to expect during their own projects.

This impressive new home, designed by Roderick James Architects, is progressing well, and we're looking forward to seeing the completed project next year.
