Taigh Na Coille – House of the Woods

Combining technology with a bespoke frame

The sloping rocky shoreline of this loch was a challenging place to build a house. It’s also within the Moidart National Scenic Area so its impact on the landscape needed to be minimal. 

Using clever technology to survey the site and get a good topographical analysis of the existing bedrock was essential to the success of this build. Working closely with the engineers who provided us with an accurate survey, meant we could off-site design and craft the bespoke frame required for this project.

Once the concrete plinths had been placed in their correct positions we built oak posts and beams on top to form the level ground floor deck. Stainless steel flitch plates and bolts (rather than the traditional mortice and tenon joints) were used to secure the Douglas fir frame onto the oak deck structure.

The Carpenter Oak team were on site for a week and what could have been a very difficult build was straight-forward, thanks to the careful pre-planning and having the experience from building Frisealach.

Using different materials for different uses

We used oak for the deck structure as this is strong and hard wearing against the elements, but the clients wanted an angular mono pitch roof for their internal frame design so Douglas fir was chosen as it lends itself well to linear, straight forms.

The finished interior colours and materials perfectly compliment the open plan vaulted living area with its Douglas fir frame. The glazing allows in natural light, and the contemporary lighting and log burner make it a cosy space in the winter also.

The outcome is a stunning property that sits low in the landscape and enjoys the many wonderful views of the loch and nearby islands.
