to Dream \u2013 Dreaming Of A Self Build Project?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Are you dreaming what I\u2019m dreaming?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve long had the desire to build my own home, but what is it that feeds this dream and keeps it alive?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What do I feel my self-build home can bring me and how will I achieve it?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How will it differ from the other homes I\u2019ve know?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My desire to build my own home comes from wanting to create a space that is beautiful, functional and affordable, in a location that fulfils my ever-changing priorities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I can\u2019t order into importance any of these things, although I am aware that compromises will undoubtedly be made in order to achieve this dream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My ideal location is probably my biggest hurdle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"\/projects\/tigh-na-mara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A home by the sea<\/a> in a <a href=\"\/projects\/tigh-darach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remote location<\/a> is what always springs to the forefront of my mind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In reality, I already experience some of the problems this would involve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whilst remoteness appeals to myself and my partner it\u2019s not ideal for life with a family.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My children enjoy the interaction with their friends and the freedom they have when they go off and play together; out on the street, in and out of each other\u2019s houses and around the village.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I too enjoy their short absences; the opportunity to get on with tasks, a quiet moment and some space to think.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remoteness brings beauty and space when life runs well and the sun is warm but when the storms roll important to us, as a family we love to connect with the outdoors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I enjoy our large garden where our chickens run free, the dog frolics and the children play.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We enjoy campfires, al fresco dining, stargazing, den building and our view across the estuary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our large garden comes at a price, it\u2019s a relentless jungle in the summer, a never ending fight with choking bindweed and grass that grows as quickly as you blink.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder if the aspects I love about our garden could be achieved in the great outdoors or in communal spaces.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If our home was near woods, a lake, the beach or had shared open landscapes we could enjoy all our garden fun out in the open, without the responsibility of the upkeep of a large garden.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We would compromise on privacy but our garden activities are social, they encompass togetherness so it would seem almost natural to share these experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I want my home to be about family, a space that is social, functional, cosy, fun, inspiring and creative, these are the things that I know, I know if my home encompasses all of these things then they will make it beautiful, I also know that these are the things that are achievable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes I dream of a large house with big open spaces, lots of room and places for people to stay. Larch Cladding on Exterior of Timber Frame Cabin\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-6-2181\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd id=\"gallery-6-2181\" class=\"wp-caption-text gallery-caption\">Modern Eco Cabin<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">The external appearance and materials used in my self-build are also significant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m drawn towards an exterior that reflects and <a href=\"\/projects\/de-glanville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compliments the surrounding landscape<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m interested in pattern, design, cultural references and stories that materials evoke.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Somehow I want to include and combine this with texture and colour, both within and outside.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I would hope to encompass reclaimed items which would embrace cultures and tell a story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My ethics lead me to wanting to build a home that is environmentally friendly, achieving this feels overwhelming.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The information is vast and often conflicting, meaning I don\u2019t really know where to start.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is it possible to build a carbon negative home using sustainable material? Possibly not, but does that matter if it\u2019s carbon negative?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019d like to use renewable resources such as solar energy and rainwater harvesting but do these technologies offer longevity or will they need replacing before they have earned their worth?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do I find a balance?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For me, the idea of building my own home raises lots of questions of which all won\u2019t be answered but the uncertainty is exciting and because it\u2019s my own home it doesn\u2019t matter (until it\u2019s built) if I change my mind or opinions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Part of the journey is making the decisions that will form your home, learning about yourself, your desires and needs and that of your family.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ultimately it is budget that will determine many decisions but it\u2019s important for me to determine where my priorities lie.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For now I will keep on dreaming\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you dreaming what I\u2019m dreaming?\u00a0 I\u2019ve long had the desire to build my own home, but what is it that feeds this dream and keeps it alive?\u00a0 What do I feel my self-build home can bring me and how will I achieve it?\u00a0 How will it differ from the other homes I\u2019ve know?
