Differently sized bays for the internal oak frame

The living room frame was going to be a more standard frame type, but the clients wanted a sling brace, having seen them in our past projects. To fit the space the frame is tall and slim, and where the eaves are much lower on one side creates a natural corridor on one side of the room.

Another unusual feature are the different sized bays. These are usually designed to be equally sized, but to work for this property the middle bay has been positioned and sized to frame the bay windows. All our frames are unique and bespoke to your needs – in this instance we designed the frame to fit exactly with the existing structure.

Further internal oak used was for the screens, which were designed to link the frame to other parts of the property and carry the flow of oak further through the building without needing full frames.

Outside oak elements to unify

For the outside we also built the large external balconies, and two staircases. These are complicated and take a long time to build as there is a lot of carpentry for every cubic metre of oak. The balconies and stairs helped to unify the appearance of the building. 

The frames were brought to site and installed in phases; the living room frame was raised first, which was then enclosed, and later the balconies and screens were fitted. Throughout the installation process we also had to be very mindful of any cranage and delivery vehicles used because of the historic cobblestones on the plot.
