The Grange Restaurant and Gift Shop

The architect had designed a very large and open space. To enable this expanse, with no timber spanning across the building, steel was used to keep the building stable (instead of the usual tie beams). Interestingly, the steel used was very light and slim, which was a conscious design choice and helped to give the space its large open look.

The other main design choice for the building was an industrial look – steel bolts are exposed (usually these are plugged), steel post feet are on display (usually these would go under the floorboards), and the steelwork bracing in the walls are also exposed.

With its very large oak posts, large oak principal rafters and exposed steel this vaulted space offers a contemporary and honest look and feel.
