New Forest Extension

To ensure the height of the extension fitted with the barn exactly, there was careful planning and coordination between the architect and our frame design team. The frame had to be designed and installed 25mm lower than the barn, with packing added to guarantee a seamless connection and insulation performance.

The design of the space has the truss in the centre, showing off the curved sling brace, and although it’s a low pitch we added non-structural knee braces to create a sweep. Being 1.5 storeys high from the ground to the top of the eaves it achieves the vaulted effect the clients wanted. The oak common rafters we also installed give the ceiling a warm finish.

The large, glazed gable allows light into the space and the studs, or beams, for the gable are larger and longer than usual to support the large pieces of glass. Glazing was done by specialists Topworks.

Externally the barn has been finished in black cladding and a slate roof to suit the local vernacular, and thoughtful landscaping has completed this lovely self-build project.
