This new home is a stunning space using a unique design which gives a fresh feel with its contemporary clean lines, is warm and comfortable and most important is a highly efficient low energy home. The SIPS construction system combined with Solar PV's and solar thermal, passive solar gain and triple glazing has made this space so energy efficient that a recovery system is the main heating source.
A quote from the project architect, Mike Hope of Roderick James Architects LLP sums it up nicely:
"This project was an exciting opportunity to develop our work with Carpenter Oak Ltd into a new direction with the support of an enlightened and supportive client. The overall design concept was to create a simple, elegant family house capable of future adaptations with minimal fuss. The contemporary oak frame is utilised efficiently to support the first floor and roof structures, while allowing the SIPS wall and roof system to 'cloak' the building with an incredibly efficient thermal envelope. The result is dramatic and exciting interior spaces within a simple, no-nonsense building."
Orchard House has won Best use of SIPS award (December 2012). Click here.
You can read the build blog of the experiences and dramas of a self build. This is now complete and forms a catalogue of a self build.
We have also been running a series of short articles following the build in 'Devon Life' magazine. The first part came out in December 2011, No 2 in the March 2012 issue, No 3 in the July issue.
