Music studio & kitchen extension in Oxon
Location:
Didcott Oxon
Lead Carpenter:
Carpenter Oak Ltd
Architect:
Timber Design Ltd. Cameron Scott
Frame Design:
Cameron Scott of Timber Design Ltd.
Details:
A remarkable rehearsal music studio for professional musicians set in the garden of their listed home. The scheme had to work within the parameters of a listed environment and yet be up-to-date in terms of design and performance. The result is a tall, light, space using traditionally jointed Douglas Fir, partially kilned, as the structure and a ventiliating clearstory for Summer cooling.
Externally the studio is clad with both vertical and horizontal cedar using a close boarding system, and with oak shingles for roofing. The generous overhanging eaves, using sections of larch with sherpa brackets are both visually aesthetic and serve to protect the building from weather.
The kitchen extension has been designed to visually connect to the sudio and garden, using a Douglas Fir frame, extensive glazing and cedar cladding. The low ceiling/eaves height presented a challenge so the solution is a flat roof covered with zinc.
