The company

A brief history of the company

In 1987 Roderick James and two others established Carpenter Oak & Woodland Co Ltd.  In 2001 the Devon branch demerged to form Carpenter Oak Ltd. to tighten quality control and form a closer bond with Roderick James Architects LLP (RJA LLP) who we refer to as our 'sister' company, although legally separate.  Carpenter Oak Ltd also does a lot of work with architects introduced to us by our clients

Awards, prestigious projects, and media coverage

  •  We have been featured on many Television programmes over the years, notably Channel 4's Grand Designs. A project in the first ever Series back in 1998, a fabulous large green oak frame home for the Randolphs in West Berkshire. The second project was the highlight of Series Two, a house familiar to many which has become known as The 'Cruciform House', situated high up on the Berkshire Downs.  (see CASE STUDIES).

  • Case Studies and articles in magazines and newspapers are too numerous to list here but we have a good selection at the Shows and a library here at the Framing Yard for you to browse through.
  • You will appreciate we have completed a huge portfolio of projects since 1987 and a selection of these is listed in the Information Pack together with the many awards won for carpentry, and architecture by RJA LLP.
  • To name drop but a few prestigious projects at this point!  Windsor Castle fire damage repairs, the theatre at Bedales School, the Buddhist temple in Herts, the new hammerbeam roof to the Great Hall at Stirling Castle, Elmore Abbey, numerous visitor's centres, and more recently a vast framed open market in Penistone, and in the pipeline a massive project at Brockwood Park School.

  • Shows. These are are listed on our SHOWS FOR 2012 page.  We exhibit in at least five shows every year and they are a very useful way to meet and chat to specialist timber framers and architects from Roderick James Architects. Our green oak show stand displays a gallery of inspirational photographs of completed projects which illustrate timber frame designs, features and solutions.

  • Show Barn. Walking into an oak frame building can take take your breath away and give you a powerful sense of space, height, majesty even, and infuse you with light and warmth that is so often missing in older, often draughty homes.  If you are thinking of living in an oak frame, then we strongly recommend that you take the time to visit the Show Barn.  We can set up a meeting for you with a Carpenter Oak Director, an architect if needed, and spend a couple of hours discussing your ideas and designs, carefully looking at costs, planning issues, and so on.  This barnhouse is brand new so has taken advantage of the latest technologies.  It demonstrates how to achieve optimum insulation and air tightness, how to apply glazing, different truss examples, lighting ideas and so on.   If you are interested you can also take a tour of the Framing Yard, meet the carpenters and see for yourself the skills involved in the art of handmade framing.  It really is a worthwhile experience and we don't make a charge for your visit!
